What is it?

Breast reduction is the reduction of the mammary volume when it is exuberant.
Mastopexy is the elimination of the excess skin when it presents important flaccidity, with an elevation of the breast, but without reduction of the volume.

What you need to know:

1) Scar
We always try to leave small scars, but they are related to the volume to be removed and to the existing flaccidity. The scars may be the shape of "L" or inverted "T" or periaurela, depending on the case.
We recommend several measures after the surgery to get a good quality of the scars. However, we cannot predict exactly the result, since this depends on individual factors. The scars go through an evolutive process, where they are redder and harder at the beginning and later become thinner and lighter. This process is slow and may take several months.

2) Anesthesia
May be local with sedation, peridural or even general, according to the indication of the anesthesiologist.

3) Surgery time
Around 1 hour and a half and 2 hours.

4) Age
Once the breast stops growing (when there is no need to buy a bigger bra).

5) Incidence of cancer

The surgery is only recommended after at least six months after the end of breast-feeding.

Before the surgery:

1) Complementary exams to be specified.

2) A picture of the region is important for the evaluation, surgical planning and documentation.

3) Get a reinforced bra (Yoga, De Millus, Du Loren, etc.) in the size agreed previously.

4) Go to the clinic on the day and time scheduled, preferably with someone, mainly if the surgery is an office procedure.

5) Don’t take jewelry and other valuables to the clinic.

6) Don’t polish your nails.

7) Any occurrence such as diseases (the flu, fever, infection) or other motives that cause the suspension of the surgery, advise in advance.

8) The use of Arnica may be done to avoid bruising. This use must start one week to ten days before the surgery. Have an evaluation with the doctor for orientation on the use of medicines before the surgery important for the healing and balance of the organism, aiming a better recovery.

Care:

1) Fasting of at least 6 hours before the surgery.

2) Medication for hypertension and other diseases must be informed for later orientation.

3) Don’t take medicine that contains acetyl salicylic acid (ex. AAS, Rhonal, Bufferin, Aspirin), one week before and one week after the surgery because it increases the bleeding.

4) Stop all appetite suppressing drugs 15 days before the surgery.

5) Don’t smoke15 days before and 15 days after the surgery. Why not decide to stop smoking?

Pós-operatório:

1) Pain: There may be a feeling of pressure that will disappear after 2 days.

2) Hospital Time: You may go home the same day, or stay at the hospital for 24 hours.

3) First Dressings: Dressings with bandages soon after the surgery and placement of a band later.

4) Posture: As straight as possible.

5) Bathing: Normal shower after the removal of the bandages. Dry the micropore with a hair dryer.

6) Clothes: Try to wear clothes opened in the front. Wear the bra day and night, during two months.

7) Food: Normal.

8) Bruises: They are absorbed within 7 to 10 days, and special ointments or gels may be used.

9) Stitches: There is no removal of stitches, because they are internal.

10) Physical Efforts: During one month, do not elevate your arms above the shoulders. Don’t drive and don’t lift weight. Exercise and swimming, only after four months.

11) Intercourse: With moderation, as soon as you feel able.

12) Sun: No exposure to the sun for 30 days.

13) Shape: The initial shape of the breasts suffers alteration, with a discreet rotation, giving them the natural shape of a teardrop. The final shape is related to the type of skin and the prior consistency of the breasts.

14) Sensibility: There may be an alteration of the sensibility of the breasts for more or for less during a period of about 2 months, but it is transitory.
