What is it?
Blepharoplasty is the plastic
surgery of the eyelids that removes the excess of skin
and fat and the flaccidity. In some cases, it also improves
the functional aspect of the region.
The periorbital rejuvenating is a concept of orbital
or periorbital rejuvenating (in the region of the eyes)
that has evolved a lot with the new endoscopic and laser
techniques. They provide a younger aspect, without scars
and a great improvement in terms of wrinkles. The “expression
wrinkles”, caused by the movement of the orbital
muscle, are indicated for the application of Botulinic
toxin (Botox or Dysport), which keeps this region in
repose.
What you need to know:
1)
Scar
It is placed in the fold of upper eyelid. Since the
skin of the eyelids is very thin, the scar tends to
be almost invisible.
2) Anesthesia
The majority of the cases are operated on with local
anesthesia, with or without sedation.
3) Surgery time
Around an hour.
4) Age
There is no ideal age. The right time is determined
by the presence of the problem to be corrected and this
may occur at any age.
Before the surgery:
1)
Complementary exams to be specified.
2) A picture of the region is important for the
evaluation, surgical planning and documentation.
3) Go to the clinic on the day and time scheduled,
preferably with someone, mainly if the surgery is an
office procedure.
4) Don’t take jewelry and other valuables
to the clinic.
5) Don’t polish your nails.
6) Any occurrence such as diseases (the flu,
fever, infection) or other motives that cause the suspension
of the surgery, advise in advance.
7) The use of Arnica may be done to avoid bruising.
This use must start one week to ten days before the
surgery. Have an evaluation with the doctor for orientation
on the use of medicines before the surgery important
for the healing and balance of the organism, aiming
a better recovery.
Care:
1)
Fasting of at least 6 hours before the surgery.
2) Medication for hypertension
and other diseases must be informed for later orientation.
3) Don’t take medicine
that contains acetyl salicylic acid (ex. AAS, Rhonal,
Bufferin, Aspirin), one week before and one week after
the surgery because it increases the bleeding.
4) Appetite suppressing
drugs must be stopped 15 days before the surgery.
5) Don’t smoke15
days before and 15 days after the surgery. Why not decide
to stop smoking?
After the surgery:
1)
Pain: Generally it is not important. Even if
there is a higher sensibility or small periods of pain,
they may be eliminated with the use of common painkillers.
2) Hospital time: Normally,
it’s an office procedure.
3) First dressings: Gauze
with cold serum or chamomile tea on the eyelids, constantly
during 48 hours.
4) Bathing: Normal.
5) Food: Free after the
surgery.
6) Bruises: The eyelids
may be more or less purple, depending on the personal
characteristics. Continue with the cold dressings and
the use of ointments may be prescribed.
7) Swelling: It varies
from patient to patient. Normally, there is a little
swelling in the first 48 hours. Some patients present
a very normal aspect in the fourth or fifth day after
the surgery, others get this result after the seventh
day.
8) Secretion: It’s
normal the accumulation of secretion in the morning.
Clean the eyes with serum several times during the day.
Don’t rub nor scratch the eyes. lhos.
9) Stitch removal: The
removal of the stitches is done around five to seven
days after the surgery. It’s possible also to
use surgical glue, what would eliminate the need to
remove the stitches.
10) Physical efforts: avoid
them in the first week.
11) Sun: No sun exposure
during two months. We recommend the use of a sun block
every three hours (SPF above 20).
12) Make-up: Allowed after the 7th day.
13) Hydration and draining: É importante
a hidratação da pele e a realização
de massagens palpebrais para acelerar a recuperação.
14) Sensibility: There
may be a small area with no sensibility close to the
eyelashes, but the sensibility will return after 1 month.
Will this disappear?
Every surgery involves
a certain recovery period. Be patient because your organism
will take care of some little problems that invariably
will call attention of some people who will ask: "Will
this disappear?” Always share with us any type
of concern. We will give the necessary explanations
for your tranquility.
Final Result:
Initially, during
the first four months after the surgery, the region
is in the process of recovery, but, with time, there
is a gradual accommodation of the organic tissues. During
this period, the scar is red and hard, but it becomes
thinner and lighter with time.
After the fourth month a new picture is taken for the
comparison of the appearance before and after the surgery.
This reevaluation may indicate the need for a retouch,
procedure considered common in plastic surgery, which
must be done after the 6th month and before the 10th
month after the surgery.
